The Office of Sports Marketing recently made the trek down to Greensboro, NC, for the National Association of Sports Commissions (NASC) Sports Events Symposium. The event ran from Monday, April 11 through Thursday, April 14. Terry and Ashley kept themselves busy attending education sessions and meeting with multiple rights holders. They even came back to Maryland with several request for proposals (RFPs) in hand.
OSM had positive meetings with right holders like USA Cycling, U.S. Transplant Games, National Senior Games Association, USA Field Hockey and the Women’s Half Marathon, to name a few. Meeting with rights holders, like the ones listed, is a key component for bringing in new sporting events to the state and generating economic dollars.
Terry and Ashley met with USA Track and Field, which has hosted and plans to host future events in Maryland like the Junior Olympics in 2012 and Masters Indoor Nationals in 2013. OSM also met with 24 Hours of Booty, the LIVESTRONG Foundation’s official 24-hour bike ride. 24 Hours of Booty will be hosting a ride on August 27 in Columbia, MD, one of only three rides in the entire nation!
Also at the symposium, Terry was promoted from Secretary of the NASC Board of Directors to Treasurer. NASC is the sports event industry's leading networking organization. NASC members range from sports commissions and convention/visitors bureaus to event owners to vendors and suppliers. Being a member of NASC helps OSM promote the state to event owners and rights holders that we otherwise might not be able to connect with.
But Terry and Ashley’s trip wasn’t all serious business, they were able to let loose and have some fun. While in Greensboro, they took in all the sights, including the ACC Hall of Champions. They were able to stop by the Maryland exhibit and visit Testudo. Terry even got to live out his dream of being a play-by-play announcer. After the experience, he admitted he’d make a better color commentator.
Events such as the NASC Sports Event Symposium allow our office the opportunity to promote Maryland as a premier destination for national and international sporting events. The connections we are making now are vital to the potential events Maryland may host in the future.
