The much anticipated announcement was officially made on Monday by Baltimore City Council President Bernard C. “Jack” Young. Washington Capitals General Manager George McPhee and First Mariner Arena General Manager Frank Remesch joined Young in making the announcement.
After a recent Washington Post article on Baltimore-based Caps fans, the news of a future game being played in the city was music to the ears of Baltimore Caps fans. McPhee mentioned that after reading the article in the Post, he knew the announcement of the Baltimore Hockey Classic would be a big hit amongst fans. When asked if this game could be a stepping stone to future Capitals games in Baltimore, McPhee wouldn’t commit, but assured fans that if this event is a success, the Capitals wouldn’t rule it out.
Remesch said the arena would be ready for hockey, even though most, if not all, of their hockey-related staff had retired. The Capitals ice crew will help the First Mariner Arena staff get the rink ready for the game. Tickets for the Baltimore Hockey Classic go on sale this Saturday at 10am. Tickets range from $32 to $145.
As one of the many Baltimore-based Capitals fans, this news makes me very happy. Instead of me commuting over an hour to get down to DC on a game day, it’s just a short drive downtown to see my beloved Capitals face-off. The Capitals have really tried to immerse themselves in the Baltimore sports culture over the past few years, and we Baltimore fans are very appreciative for that. Over the past few seasons, Baltimore fans have been treated to local player meet and greets and hockey clinics. This game is just another sign that the Capitals recognize their fans to the north.

Maybe now I’ll stop getting funny looks walking around town in my Bohvechkin shirt!
