A funny thing happened last October when the Barry Levinson ESPN documentary "The Band That Wouldn't Die" was screened at the stadium for old timers and long time football fans.
At the conclusion of the inspiring story of how the Baltimore Colts Band stayed together through the dark days after the Mayflower flight, the Marching Ravens played the old Colts fight song (one of the few things that didn't leave town with the team.) To the surprise of many, the crowd sang the still-remembered words along with them. Like the band, it seems the iconic anthem so associated with the glory days on 33rd didn't die, either.
That inspired band president John Ziemann, who led the band through its darkest days and triumphant renaissance, to Ravenize the original lyrics and, along with the team, conduct an informal online survey to see if the fans wanted to bring the old fight song back. By an overwhelming margin, they did.
So last Wednesday at the stadium barbeque, the Marching Ravens unveiled the new version, which you can view here.
Tonight, in a national broadcast, the rest of the country will hear this blast from the past after every Ravens score and when they defeat the Giants.
I can't say I remembered the words to the old song like many of the die hard Colts fans, but I never failed to shout along with the "Fight, Fight, FIGHT!!" part. You almost have to.
Whether you're at the Bank tonight or tuned in to the tube, feel the energy. I can't wait to stand along Ravens Walk and cheer the band as they lead the fans into the stadium to that nostalgic refrain.
